You don't need to spend £1,000 to buy a good student laptop.

For most school, college and university students, the important question is not simply “How much can I spend?” but “What useful specification can I get within that budget?”

In 2026, our general recommendation is:

8GB RAM = practical minimum
16GB RAM = preferred for several years' use
256GB SSD = practical minimum for Windows
512GB SSD = preferred
Chromebooks can work well with less local storage because they are designed around cloud-based use

The £350–£500 range is currently the sweet spot for mainstream student laptops.

You can increasingly find 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage within this budget, and that remains our preferred specification for a laptop expected to last several years.

But don't reject a good 8GB laptop simply because a 16GB version exists. An 8GB model at around £350 can represent excellent value for normal school and college work. If moving to 16GB adds £50–£100, we would usually take the extra memory. If it adds £200 or more, compare other laptops instead.

The aim is the best-balanced laptop within the budget - not the biggest RAM number at any price.

Here are our current recommendations at three common student-laptop budgets.

Best student laptop under £300

HP Chromebook 14 14a-nf0003sa - Best student laptop under £300

Typical buying range: £200–£300

Recommended configuration: Intel N100 / 8GB RAM / 128GB storage / 14-inch Full HD display / ChromeOS

At under £300, we would still rather recommend a capable Chromebook than push buyers towards a very low-spec Windows laptop simply to get Windows.

The HP Chromebook 14 is a particularly sensible student option because the configuration we recommend has 8GB RAM, rather than the 4GB still found in many entry-level Chromebooks. It combines this with an Intel N100 processor, 128GB of local storage and a Full HD 14-inch screen.

For students mainly using Google Classroom, Google Docs, Microsoft 365 online, web research, email, video calls and browser-based learning platforms, that is a well-balanced specification. ChromeOS is relatively light on hardware, so 8GB goes further here than it can on a low-cost Windows laptop.

The 128GB storage is also less restrictive than it sounds if most schoolwork is stored in Google Drive, OneDrive or another cloud service.

Why we recommend it

This is a good example of buying for the student's actual needs rather than chasing specifications. It is relatively inexpensive, straightforward to use and has enough memory for normal cloud-based schoolwork.

What to check before buying

The important limitation is ChromeOS.

A Chromebook cannot run every traditional Windows application. If the student's school, college or course requires specialist Windows software, check compatibility before buying.

Also check the exact configuration carefully: cheaper versions of the HP Chromebook 14 can have only 4GB RAM or 64GB storage. We specifically recommend the N100 / 8GB / 128GB version.

Best student laptops under £500

At around £350–£500, student-laptop choice becomes much more interesting.

You can increasingly find 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage within this budget, and that remains our preferred specification for a laptop expected to last several years.

But 16GB should not become a box that has to be ticked at any price.

A good 8GB laptop at £350–£450 can be an excellent student computer. If moving to 16GB adds £50–£100, we would normally choose the extra memory. If the upgrade adds £200 or pushes the laptop well beyond £500, compare another model instead.

The aim is to buy the best-balanced laptop for the money, not simply the one with the largest RAM number.

ASUS Vivobook 15 X1504 - Best low-price Windows laptop

Recommended configuration: Intel Core i5/Core 5 class processor / 8GB RAM / 512GB SSD / 15.6-inch Full HD / Windows 11

The ASUS Vivobook 15 is one of the clearest examples of why we don't automatically reject an 8GB laptop.

For everyday student work - essays, Microsoft 365, web research, online lessons, video calls and normal browser multitasking - 8GB RAM remains perfectly usable. Combined with a Core i5-class processor and a 512GB SSD, it can make a very capable school, college or home-study laptop.

The price is what makes the decision.

If you find the 8GB/512GB model at around £350–£400, it can represent excellent value. If a 16GB version of the same or a similar Vivobook is available for a modest premium, choose the 16GB model because it provides more room for heavier multitasking and longer-term use.

But don't pay £600 or more simply to turn an otherwise affordable Vivobook into a 16GB laptop. At that point there are better-value 16GB alternatives.

Why we recommend it

The Vivobook 15 gives students a useful 15.6-inch Full HD screen, sensible processor performance and—crucially—512GB of SSD storage without necessarily pushing the price into the mid-range.

It is particularly attractive when discounted.

What to check before buying

Amazon listings for the Vivobook family can contain several processors, RAM capacities and SSD sizes. Check the configuration shown immediately before ordering.

Our target is at least 8GB RAM and preferably 512GB SSD.

If you find 16GB within the same general price range, choose it.

HP 15-fd0062na - Best all-round Windows laptop under £500

Good buying range: approximately £390–£500

Recommended configuration: Intel Core i5-1334U / 8GB RAM / 512GB SSD / 15.6-inch Full HD / Windows 11

The HP 15-fd0062na takes a straightforward approach to being a student laptop.

Its 13th-generation Intel Core i5 processor provides substantially more capability than the entry-level processors often found in cheaper Windows machines, while the 512GB SSD provides enough local storage for several years of documents, coursework, applications and personal files.

This particular configuration has 8GB RAM. We are comfortable recommending that for normal school and college workloads at the right price.

It should handle Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, web research, streaming, video calls and everyday multitasking comfortably.

If you find a comparable HP 15 with 16GB RAM for only a modest premium, that would be our preference for longer-term ownership. But once the upgrade takes the price materially beyond £500, compare the Lenovo 16GB option below rather than paying a large premium just for additional memory.

Why we recommend it

This is the conventional all-rounder of the group.

You get a proper Core i5 processor, 512GB SSD, a Full HD 15.6-inch screen and Windows 11 in a familiar format that should work with virtually all mainstream school and college software.

It is therefore an easy recommendation for families that don't need anything specialist.

What to check before buying

The 15-fd0062na itself is an 8GB/512GB configuration. The memory is not something we would assume can easily be upgraded later, so buy on the basis that 8GB is what you will use.

For mainstream student work that is fine; if you already know the student regularly runs demanding applications or very heavy multitasking, start with a 16GB laptop instead.

Lenovo IdeaPad 1 15 - Best-value 16GB option under £500

Buy when available below £500

Recommended configuration: AMD Ryzen 5 7520U / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD / 15.6-inch Full HD / Windows 11

If your priority is getting 16GB RAM and 512GB storage without moving into premium-laptop pricing, the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 is worth watching.

The recommended 82VG004UUK configuration pairs a Ryzen 5 7520U processor with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. For normal student workloads, that means plenty of memory for browser tabs, Office applications, online lessons and multitasking, as well as enough local storage for several years of use.

It isn't a premium laptop. The reason to buy it is the specification for the money rather than premium materials, a high-end display or particularly sophisticated design.

And that makes its current price especially important.

Why we recommend it

When available at around £400–£500, the IdeaPad 1 gives students the 16GB/512GB combination we prefer for longer-term use without requiring a jump into the £600–£700 category.

For a parent who has already decided they want 16GB RAM, this is exactly the sort of configuration we would check before paying substantially more for an upgraded version of another laptop.

What to check before buying

Do not buy this configuration at any price simply because we list it under £500.

Amazon's price can vary significantly between sellers. If the 16GB/512GB model has risen above £500, compare the ASUS and HP alternatives - or check again later - rather than paying £600+ for a laptop whose main attraction is value.

Also make sure you are looking at the Ryzen 5 / 16GB / 512GB configuration, as the IdeaPad 1 family contains lower-spec variants.

Best student laptops under £700

Once you're spending £500–£700, the extra money should buy a meaningful improvement.

That might mean a touchscreen, a larger and more useful display, better portability, stronger construction or another feature the student will actually use.

At this price, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD should generally be expected rather than treated as premium features.

ASUS Vivobook 15 X1504VA - Best touchscreen student laptop under £700

Good buying range: approximately £500–£650

Recommended configuration: Intel Core i5-1335U / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD / 15.6-inch Full HD touchscreen / Windows 11

This version of the Vivobook 15 moves beyond the budget machines by combining a strong everyday specification with a Full HD touchscreen.

The Core i5-1335U processor, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD give it plenty of capacity for school, sixth-form and university work, including heavier browser multitasking, Microsoft 365, video calls and general productivity.

The touchscreen can also be genuinely useful for navigating learning resources, presentations and documents, particularly for students who prefer more direct interaction with the screen.

We would not, however, pay a very large premium purely to get touch capability. The rest of the specification still has to justify the price.

Why we recommend it

This is a good step-up option for someone who wants something more than a standard £400–£500 laptop without paying premium-ultrabook prices.

Unlike some lower-cost configurations, there is no immediate pressure to upgrade the memory or storage: 16GB/512GB is already our preferred long-term student specification.

What to check before buying

Check that Amazon has selected the X1504VA / Core i5-1335U / 16GB / 512GB / Full HD touchscreen configuration.

The same Amazon listing family can contain several other Vivobook configurations, including different screens, processors and storage capacities.

If the touchscreen model moves much above £650, compare the larger-screen Vivobook 16 or premium alternatives rather than automatically paying the higher price.

ASUS Vivobook 16 X1605VA - Best large-screen student laptop under £700

Recommended configuration: Intel Core 5-120U / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD / 16-inch 1920 × 1200 display / Windows 11

The ASUS Vivobook 16 is the option we would choose from this group when screen space matters more than maximum portability.

Its 16-inch display uses a 1920 × 1200, 16:10 format, giving students more vertical working space than a conventional 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 screen.

That extra space is useful for essays, websites, spreadsheets and research because more of the document remains visible without scrolling.

The rest of the specification is also well suited to longer-term student use. The Intel Core 5-120U processor is paired with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD, providing plenty of headroom for normal productivity and heavier multitasking.

Why we recommend it

Rather than paying more simply for a faster processor, the Vivobook 16 gives the student something they can actually notice every day: a larger, taller workspace.

For a student who works mainly at home, in accommodation or at a desk, that can be more useful than shaving a few hundred grams from the laptop's weight.

What to check before buying

The trade-off is portability.

A 16-inch laptop takes up more room in a bag and is less convenient to carry around school, college or university every day than a 14-inch alternative.

Amazon also carries several Vivobook 16 configurations, so confirm that the model selected is the Core 5-120U / 16GB / 512GB / 1920 × 1200 version before ordering.
