Not every learner needs more content - some need better diagnosis

When a learner is struggling, the instinct is often to add another worksheet, video, course or tutoring hour. A more useful first step is to identify which kind of problem is actually limiting progress.

Before adding more, identify the problem

Education has never offered families more learning content. A learner can move from a school platform to a revision app, an online video, an AI explanation, a workbook and a tutoring resource in a single evening. That abundance can make the next decision appear obvious: if progress is slow, add more.

Sometimes, more practice is exactly right. But practice only works well when it targets the right barrier. Without that step, a learner may simply repeat the same misconception, rely more heavily on prompts or become less confident as the workload grows.

This article is not another argument about whether teachers understand learners better than algorithms. The practical question here is what parents and tutors should do with that judgement before selecting the next intervention.

Five different problems can look like the same learning gap

A low score, an unfinished task, or a repeated wrong answer does not reveal the cause. The same visible difficulty may come from five very different barriers.

These categories are not diagnoses of medical conditions or special educational needs. They are practical starting hypotheses that help an educator choose a better next question. A learner may also experience more than one barrier at the same time.

1. Missing prior knowledge

New learning depends on earlier knowledge being secure. A learner who appears to be struggling with algebra may actually have an insecure understanding of negative numbers, fractions or inverse operations.

The weak response is to keep teaching the current topic and hope repetition closes the gap. A stronger response is to identify the earliest unstable point and rebuild from there.

Useful evidence includes whether the learner can complete simpler prerequisite tasks accurately and explain the relationship between the earlier idea and the current one.

2. A misconception

A misconception is not simply a missing piece of information. It is an existing explanation that feels logical to the learner but leads them in the wrong direction.

More practice can strengthen it. If every new question is approached using the same mistaken rule, volume increases fluency in the error.

Contrasting examples are often more useful: one case where the learner's rule appears to work, another where it fails, followed by a question such as, “What is different here?” The aim is to help the learner revise their model, not merely remember a correction.

3. Difficulty transferring knowledge

Some learners succeed when a question resembles the worked example but struggle as soon as the wording, diagram or context changes.

That usually means the method has been copied rather than understood deeply enough to select independently.

A better response is to vary the problem, ask the learner to decide which knowledge applies and require a brief explanation of why. Progress is shown when the learner can recognise the underlying idea without relying on surface clues.

4. A language, processing or access barrier

A learner may understand the subject but struggle to access the way the task is presented. Long instructions, unfamiliar vocabulary, dense layouts or the requirement to organise a written response can hide what they know.

The response should not automatically be more subject teaching. It may be a clearer prompt, reduced language load, a visual model, sentence structure, extra processing time or a different way to demonstrate understanding.

For learners with SEND or emerging additional needs, adjustments should be aligned with school and specialist advice where applicable. Tutoring should support, not replace, that wider process.

5. Confidence, anxiety or learned avoidance

Sometimes the learner has enough knowledge to begin but no longer expects effort to lead to success. They avoid unfamiliar questions, wait for prompts or say “I can't do it” before testing an idea.

The answer is not to remove all challenges. Nor is it to increase pressure. It is to sequence work so that the learner experiences genuine success, understands why it happened and gradually attempts more with less support.

Evidence of progress includes willingness to start, persistence after an error, use of a strategy without prompting and more accurate self-assessment.

A simple decision process before choosing support

1. Define the visible difficulty precisely. Avoid broad statements such as “behind in maths”. Identify the task, concept or behaviour that is causing concern.

2. Collect two or three examples. Look for patterns across correct, incorrect and incomplete work rather than relying on one score.

3. Ask the learner to explain. Find out what they thought the task required, which step felt uncertain and why they chose their approach.

4. Test the most likely barrier. Use a prerequisite task, a contrasting example, an unfamiliar context, a reduced-language version or a confidence-building attempt.

5. Choose one targeted response. Select the explanation, adaptation, practice or specialist referral that follows from the evidence.

6. Review whether independence increased. If the learner only succeeds with the same level of prompting, the intervention needs to be adapted.

Before buying another resource, parents can ask six questions

  • What precise difficulty are we trying to solve?

  • What evidence suggests that this is the underlying problem?

  • What has already been tried, and how did the learner respond?

  • Will this resource rebuild a foundation, correct a misconception, improve transfer, remove an access barrier or rebuild confidence?

  • How will we know that the learner is becoming more independent rather than simply completing more activities?

  • When should the school, SENCO or another specialist be involved?

A strong tutor should be able to explain why a particular approach is appropriate. “More practice” may be the right answer, but it should be a reasoned decision rather than the default.

What tutors should record

A concise diagnostic record is more useful than a long activity log. It might include:

  • the specific learning objective;

  • the evidence observed;

  • the likely barrier being tested;

  • the support or adaptation used;

  • the amount of prompting required;

  • what transferred to a new task;

  • and the next decision.

This creates a practical cycle of assess, respond and review without turning every tutoring session into a formal assessment.

What platforms should support

Education platforms often reward volume: more sessions, more questions, more minutes and more content. Those measures are easy to count, but do not necessarily show that the intervention is correct.

A responsible platform should help tutors and families record the reason for support, the evidence behind the next step and whether the learner is becoming more independent.

Technology can organise this evidence and reduce administration. The decision about what it means should remain with the qualified professional and, where appropriate, the learner's school or specialist team.
